RALPH RUSSELL DAY at SOAS

28TH JUNE 2007

A day of events was organised by the South Asian Centre at the School of Oriental and African Studies ‘to celebrate the life and work of Ralph Russell’. The programme was excellently co-ordinated by Talat Ahmed, and included contributions from many people I had worked with over my years at SOAS and beyond – students, colleagues, and some whom I have only recently met, but who to my pleasure have found my work valuable in their own related fields.

A publication of the key contributions is currently being produced. Three of the more personal ones are included here, from people who learnt Urdu from me and then became Urdu teachers themselves:

  • Alison Safadi - one of my SOAS students, who went on to teach Urdu in secondary schools
  • Ian Russell - my son and a co-teacher on some of the earliest Urdu courses for adults in the community, who then organised a series of weekend courses using my teaching materials
  • Marion Molteno – my co-teacher on intensive courses for adults in Chorley, Lancashire, with whom I worked closely in developing training for teachers of community languages, and who has edited my autobiography
